The Wisdom of Sirach, Chapter 17ΣΟΦΙΑ ΣΕΙΡΑΧ ΙΖ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Mortals are taught, judged, pitied, and summoned to repent under God's eye.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Sirach 17 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Moves from creation and human endowment to covenantal oversight and finally to repentance and praise. Its opening lines rehearse humanity's origin from earth, the gift of strength, image, senses, understanding, moral discernment, and a law of life, so that human beings appear as dignified yet bounded creatures formed for responsible living before God. The middle unit emphasizes divine surveillance, covenant, neighbor-directed commandment, and the certainty that neither sins nor almsgiving pass unnoticed. The final movement turns exhortative, calling the hearer back to the Lord while contrasting the living's present praise with the silence of the dead and closing by reducing human pretension before the One who inspects even the height of heaven. Greek versification is followed here; the surviving sequence omits verses 5, 9, 16, 18, and 21 in the common English numbering.
