The Wisdom of Sirach, Chapter 16ΣΟΦΙΑ ΣΕΙΡΑΧ ΙϚ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Wicked offspring do not save, and no sinner escapes the Lord's ordered gaze.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Sirach 16 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The unit begins by challenging confidence in numerous but ungodly children, then amasses historical and proverbial examples showing that neither numbers, antiquity, nor collective strength shield the impious from divine judgment. From verse 17 onward, the discourse turns to the futility of imagining concealment from God and finally to a measured meditation on the Lord’s ordered creation, whose parts remain apportioned, sustained, and filled under his inspection. Greek versification is followed here; in the extant Septuagint tradition represented here, the numbering moves from verse 14 to verse 17 without verses 15-16.

Do not desire a multitude of useless children, and do not rejoice over ungodly sons.

Prohibitionasyndeton
The unit opens by severing numerical abundance from covenantal value.
