Serving the Lord means testing, patience, and trust in his mercy.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Sirach 2 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. This unit is an exhortation to steadfastness under trial. The addressee who approaches the Lord is told from the outset to prepare for testing, straighten the heart, cling to God, and accept humiliations with patience, because precious things are proved in fire and acceptable people in the furnace of affliction. The center of the chapter broadens that counsel into a litany addressed to those who fear the Lord: wait for his mercy, trust him, hope for good, and look back to the earlier generations as evidence that the Lord does not abandon those who call upon him. The final third balances those promises with a series of woes against cowardice, divided conduct, and lost endurance, before closing with a compact portrait of the God-fearers as people who obey the Lord's words, seek his favor, humble themselves before him, and choose his hands over human hands because his greatness and mercy answer one another. Versification follows the LXX.
