The Wisdom of Sirach, Chapter 36ΣΟΦΙΑ ΣΕΙΡΑΧ ΛϚ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Pray for Israel's restoration, then test words and choose companions wisely.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Sirach 36 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The unit has a bipartite shape. Verses 1-17 are a national prayer asking the Lord to renew signs, humble hostile rulers, gather Jacob, vindicate prophecy, and fill Zion and Jerusalem again with glory. Verses 18-27 then shift into sapiential observation: just as palate and heart test what they receive, so human judgment must evaluate speech and character, especially in the selection of a wife and in the contrast between a stable household and a wandering, unsheltered man. Greek versification is followed here.
