The Wisdom of Sirach, Chapter 35ΣΟΦΙΑ ΣΕΙΡΑΧ ΛΕ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

God receives obedient generosity and hears the cry of the afflicted.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Sirach 35 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The opening half of the chapter redefines sacrifice ethically: keeping the law, repaying kindness, almsgiving, cheerful tithing, and freedom from wickedness are all treated as the true substance of worship. The second half then grounds that ethic in the Lord's character as judge. Because he is not subject to bribes or respect of persons, the cries of the poor, orphan, widow, and humble servant ascend directly to him, and their prayer becomes the instrument through which divine judgment eventually breaks oppressive power. Greek versification is followed here.
