The Wisdom of Sirach, Chapter 34ΣΟΦΙΑ ΣΕΙΡΑΧ ΛΔ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Dreams deceive, unjust sacrifice offends, and the Lord shelters the reverent.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Sirach 34 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Falls into three closely related movements. It first demystifies dreams, divination, and omens, treating them as empty and deceptive unless a true visitation comes from the Most High; in contrast, law and wisdom reach completion through faithful speech. It then praises experience, especially experience disciplined by the fear of the Lord, so that lived testing yields understanding, testimony, and confidence in divine protection. The final section turns sharply against offerings funded by injustice: sacrifice taken from the poor is morally contaminated, and repeated rituals cannot compensate for extortion, withheld wages, or unrepented sin. Greek versification is followed here.
