The Wisdom of Sirach, Chapter 38ΣΟΦΙΑ ΣΕΙΡΑΧ ΛΗ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The Lord gives healing, mourning its measure, and labor its place.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Sirach 38 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Falls into three movements. First, Sirach defends the physician and medicinal arts by locating both within divine creation and providence: prayer, repentance, offering, and treatment are not rivals but cooperating responses to illness under God. Second, he treats mourning with realism, allowing tears, lament, and burial while warning against grief that destroys the living. Third, he contrasts the scribe's leisure for wisdom with the practical trades whose skill builds and maintains civic life; they are socially indispensable, though not usually the public voice of deliberation and legal instruction. Greek versification is followed here.
