The Wisdom of Sirach, Chapter 39ΣΟΦΙΑ ΣΕΙΡΑΧ ΛΘ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The praying scribe ripens into praise of the Lord's ordered works.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Sirach 39 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The first section elaborates the portrait of the ideal scribe introduced at the end of the previous chapter: he studies the law, proverbs, enigmas, prophecy, and the hidden sense of tradition, and his public authority flows from prayer and divine gift rather than from technical cleverness alone. From verse 12 onward the discourse becomes hymnic and sapiential. Sirach summons the holy to blossom in praise and then meditates on the goodness, order, and providential suitability of all the Lord's works, including even punitive agencies that serve justice at the appointed time. It closes with a final call to bless the divine name. Greek versification is followed here.
