The Wisdom of Sirach, Chapter 40ΣΟΦΙΑ ΣΕΙΡΑΧ Μ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Adam's burden is heavy, but mercy and fear of the Lord endure beyond wealth.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Sirach 40 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. It begins with a panoramic description of human anxiety from birth to death, making royal glory and common misery share the same horizon of fear, sleep-disturbance, violence, and mortality. It then contrasts the fleeting force of wicked possessions with the permanence of faithfulness, mercy, and especially the fear of the Lord, which repeatedly outranks other goods. The closing unit warns against the humiliations of begging and table-dependence, so that reverent integrity becomes the chapter's practical answer to universal instability. Greek versification is followed here.
