The Wisdom of Sirach, Chapter 41ΣΟΦΙΑ ΣΕΙΡΑΧ ΜΑ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Learn right shame, remember death rightly, and seek the endurance of a good name.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Sirach 41 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The first movement addresses death under two different human conditions: it is bitter to the prosperous and untroubled, yet good to the exhausted and despairing. Sirach then contrasts the cursed posterity and obliterated memory of the wicked with the abiding worth of a good name. The final section offers a catalog of things about which shame is appropriate, prefaced by the claim that not every shame is good and not every social approval is trustworthy. Greek versification is followed here.
