The Wisdom of Sirach, Chapter 44ΣΟΦΙΑ ΣΕΙΡΑΧ ΜΔ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The fathers are remembered because covenant faithfulness endures through them.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Sirach 44 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. This unit begins the long encomium traditionally called the Praise of the Fathers. Sirach first reflects generally on human fame, memory, and oblivion, distinguishing between those whose names vanished and the merciful righteous whose remembrance remains. He then turns to covenantal ancestors: Enoch as a model of repentance, Noah as the righteous remnant in wrath, Abraham as the singular covenant-bearer tested faithful, and Isaac and Jacob as heirs of blessing, inheritance, and tribal order. Greek versification is followed here.
