The Wisdom of Sirach, Chapter 46ΣΟΦΙΑ ΣΕΙΡΑΧ ΜϚ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Joshua, Caleb, judges, and Samuel show the Lord defending and establishing Israel.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Sirach 46 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The unit continues the Praise of the Fathers by celebrating Joshua, Caleb, the judges, and Samuel as instruments of the Lord's saving governance. Joshua is praised as warrior-successor to Moses, the one through whom God subdued enemies and granted Israel its inheritance. Caleb appears beside him as the faithful dissenter who resisted the congregation's unbelief and received enduring strength. The judges are remembered briefly but warmly, while Samuel closes the chapter as prophet, judge, intercessor, and witness whose authority extended even beyond death. Greek versification is followed here.
