The Wisdom of Sirach, Chapter 47ΣΟΦΙΑ ΣΕΙΡΑΧ ΜΖ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

David and Solomon display gifted kingship shadowed by compromise and fracture.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Sirach 47 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Moves from David to Solomon and then to the divided monarchy. David is celebrated as warrior, poet, liturgical organizer, and covenant king whose sins were forgiven and whose horn was exalted. Solomon receives an extended encomium for wisdom, peace, temple-building, fame, and literary brilliance, but the praise turns into rebuke when his love of women corrupts his glory and leads to dynastic fracture. It ends by explaining the division of the kingdom while still insisting that the Lord did not nullify his mercy toward David's line. Greek versification is followed here.
