The Song of Songs, Chapter 5ΑΣΜΑ ΑΣΜΑΤΩΝ Ε′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Garden union gives way to delay, loss, wounding, and a love-sick praise that keeps desire alive through absence.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Song of Songs 5 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter opens with apparent consummation in the garden, then turns abruptly into nocturnal delay, missed encounter, searching, public wounding, and renewed praise. The beloved's knock meets hesitation; when the woman opens, he has withdrawn. The city watchmen strike and shame her, but she remains love-sick and describes the beloved in one of the Song's most elaborate portrait hymns. The chapter therefore holds together union, loss, seeking, and the sustaining power of remembered beauty.
