The Wisdom of Solomon, Chapter 1ΣΟΦΙΑ ΣΟΛΟΜΩΝΤΟΣ Α′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Rulers are summoned to love righteousness because wisdom refuses duplicity and God's life-giving purpose stands against death.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Wisdom of Solomon 1 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter serves as the book's overture: rulers of the earth are summoned to love righteousness, seek the Lord sincerely, and understand that wisdom does not dwell with duplicity, blasphemy, or injustice. The argument then widens from exhortation to theological disclosure. God's searching Spirit fills the inhabited world, overhears grumbling speech, and exposes hidden lawlessness. From there the chapter turns to a foundational claim about creation itself: death does not arise from God's intention, for he made all things to exist and the world in its ordered generations for life. The final verse introduces the tragic counter-movement that the next chapter will expand, namely the ungodly's deliberate alliance with death. Read as a whole, Wisdom 1 establishes the book's governing contrast between life-giving righteousness and self-destructive impiety under the all-seeing presence of God.
