Wisdom 2 gives extended voice to the inner logic of impiety.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Wisdom of Solomon 2 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Wisdom 2 gives extended voice to the inner logic of impiety. The ungodly first reason from mortality to nihilism, then convert that despair into sensual urgency, social oppression, and finally a calculated persecution of the righteous man whose life and speech expose them. The chapter's dramatic center lies in this hostile testing of the righteous, language that later Jewish and Christian readers heard as uncannily resonant with the passion of the just sufferer. Yet the narrator does not leave the wicked speech standing. The final verses overturn it by locating human vocation in incorruption, in God's own image, and by tracing death not to the Creator's purpose but to the devil's envy and to those who choose his portion. Read as a whole, the chapter shows that false views of creation generate false ethics, while true theology discloses both the dignity of the righteous and the self-blinding force of evil.
