Theme

Wisdom 19 concludes the long exodus meditation by drawing together Egypt's final pursuit, Israel's passage through transformed creation, the memory of plague and provision, and a final theological reflection on the reordering of the elements.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Wisdom of Solomon 19 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Wisdom 19 concludes the long exodus meditation by drawing together Egypt's final pursuit, Israel's passage through transformed creation, the memory of plague and provision, and a final theological reflection on the reordering of the elements. The chapter insists that the same creation can become judgment for the wicked and safe passage for the righteous because the whole cosmos answers to God's command. It also sharpens the ethical indictment of the oppressors by stressing their hatred of strangers and even of benefactor guests. The remarkable musical image in the closing section interprets the miracles not as chaos but as re-tuned order: the elements keep their identity while changing their roles in service of divine mercy and justice. The book finally ends not in abstraction but in doxology, confessing that the Lord magnified and glorified his people and stood by them in every time and place.
