Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Theme

Wisdom 18 continues the book's meditation on the exodus by setting Israel's deliverance and Egypt's judgment in deliberate counterpoint.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Wisdom of Solomon 18 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Wisdom 18 continues the book's meditation on the exodus by setting Israel's deliverance and Egypt's judgment in deliberate counterpoint. Light is given to God's holy ones while darkness, bereavement, and terror engulf their enemies; the same historical night becomes salvation for one people and destruction for another. The chapter dwells especially on the death of the Egyptian firstborn, but it frames that catastrophe within broader themes of divine justice, covenant memory, liturgical hope, and priestly intercession. The central poetic image is unforgettable: God's all-powerful word leaps from the heavenly throne as a warrior, while Egypt is undone by fear and death in the night. Yet the chapter does not end with destruction alone. It closes by recalling how wrath was checked among the righteous through the faithful ministry of an unblemished servant, whose prayer, incense, and covenant remembrance stood between the dead and the living. Read as a whole, Wisdom 18 presents the exodus not only as national deliverance but as a revelation of how God's word judges, saves, and remembers his own.
