The Book of Zechariah, Chapter 12ΖΑΧΑΡΙΑΣ ΙΒ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Jerusalem becomes the center of divine defense, shattered enemies, and a mourning repentance poured out by grace.

Translation & textual notes

Jerusalem is presented as the paradoxical center of divine defense, international assault, and communal repentance. The Septuagint frames the oracle with a strong creator formula in verse 1, recasts the city as destabilizing thresholds and a trampled stone for the nations, and preserves striking Greek divergences in verses 10-11: the people look toward the Lord because of the one against whom they 'danced in triumph,' and the paradigmatic mourning is compared not to Hadad-rimmon but to the lament of a pomegranate grove cut down in a field. The chapter moves from siege and military reversal to a spirit-poured mourning that reaches every surviving tribe household by household.

λῆμμα λόγου κυρίου ἐπὶ τὸν Ισραηλ λέγει κύριος ἐκτείνων οὐρανὸν καὶ θεμελιῶν γῆν καὶ πλάσσων πνεῦμα ἀνθρώπου ἐν αὐτῷ

An oracle of the word of the Lord concerning Israel. Thus says the Lord, stretching out heaven and founding earth and forming the spirit of man within him:

Superscription with creator formulaasyndeton
The heading identifies the message as a burden concerning Israel and immediately grounds it in the Lord’s cosmic acts of stretching, founding, and forming. The coming defense of Jerusalem rests on creator authority.
