The Book of Zechariah, Chapter 2ΖΑΧΑΡΙΑΣ Β′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The powers that scattered Judah are answered by craftsmen, and Jerusalem is measured for unwalled glory.

Translation & textual notes

The night visions continue, and in the Septuagint this chapter division begins with the vision of the four horns and four craftsmen before moving to the measuring of Jerusalem. The first unit answers the scattering of Judah and Israel with divinely raised agents who will terrify and cut down the powers that exalted themselves. The second unit then reorients attention from enemy overthrow to Zion's astonishing future. A measuring line appears, but Jerusalem's destiny exceeds ordinary fortification: she will be inhabited in open abundance, and the Lord himself will be a wall of fire and an indwelling glory. The chapter closes with a layered summons to flee Babylon, rejoice as daughter Zion, and watch many nations attach themselves to the Lord. Particularly important in the Greek is the repeated language of sending and indwelling, which makes the vision not only architectural or political but profoundly theological: the restored city is secure because the Lord rises, dwells there, and claims Judah and Jerusalem anew.

καὶ ἦρα τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς μου καὶ εἶδον καὶ ἰδοὺ τέσσαρα κέρατα

And I lifted up my eyes and saw, and behold, four horns.

Vision reportasyndeton
The new scene is introduced with the classic visionary formula. The horns are symbolic powers, and their number suggests a full range of hostile force rather than a single enemy.

And the Lord showed me four craftsmen.

Counter visionasyndeton
The answer to the horns is not abstract reassurance but another symbolic group. The craftsmen are agents prepared to deal practically and forcefully with the instruments of scattering.

And I said, “What are these coming to do?” And he said to me, “These are the horns that scattered Judah and Israel and shattered them, so that none of them lifted up his head; and these have come to sharpen them in their hands, the four horns, the nations that raised a horn against the land of the Lord in order to scatter it.”

Judgment explanationasyndeton
The explanation rehearses the violence of the horns and then presents the craftsmen as the answer to it. The imagery is terse and difficult, but the sense is clear: the proud nations that raised their horn against the Lord's land will now be dealt with in turn.

Inquiry about the visionasyndeton
Zechariah again asks for orientation within the scene. The reply frames Jerusalem not as a ruin merely to be repaired but as a reality to be expansively reimagined.
