The Book of Zephaniah, Chapter 1ΣΟΦΟΝΙΑΣ Α′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The day of the Lord approaches as total visitation against Judah's idolatry, wealth, and complacency.

Translation & textual notes

A full genealogical superscription opens the book and then drives immediately into its dominant theme: the approaching day of the Lord as a work of total visitation. The Greek chapter first announces a near-cosmic undoing of life on the earth (1:2-3), then narrows that judgment to Judah and Jerusalem by cataloging concrete forms of apostasy, syncretism, and civic complacency (1:4-13). From 1:7 onward the imagery turns sacrificial and liturgical: the Lord has prepared a sacrifice, consecrated his guests, and will inspect the city like a priestly judge. The final strophe (1:14-18) is a classic Septuagintal day-of-the-Lord litany, piling up terms for wrath, distress, darkness, trumpet-blast, and irreversible devastation. Several lines show characteristically Greek wording that does not always mirror the Masoretic wording exactly, especially in 1:9-12, so the annotations below track the LXX diction as it stands while noting likely Hebrew-background resonances where they clarify the translator's choices.

The word of the Lord that came to Zephaniah son of Cushi, son of Gedaliah, son of Amariah, son of Hezekiah, in the days of Josiah son of Amon, king of Judah.

Superscriptionasyndeton
The chapter opens with a formal prophetic heading. The extended genealogy gives Zephaniah unusual pedigree, and the temporal notice situates the oracle inside Judah's royal history under Josiah.

Let human being and beast fail; let the birds of the sky and the fish of the sea fail; and I will remove human beings from the face of the earth, says the Lord.

Expansion of universal judgmentasyndeton
The verse echoes creation-order language by ranging over land-creatures, birds, and fish. This meristic sweep presents the day of the Lord as more than local punishment; it is a near-uncreation scene.

And I will stretch out my hand against Judah and against all who inhabit Jerusalem, and I will remove from this place the names of Baal and the names of the priests.

Judgment narrowed to Judahκαὶ
After the cosmic opening the oracle turns sharply toward covenant land. The stretched-out hand formula signals active intervention, and the target is both rival cult and the personnel who sustain it.

Catalog of syncretistic offendersκαὶ
The verse strings together participles to catalog compromised worship. Rooftop astral devotion stands beside oaths made both by the Lord and by another sovereign figure, exposing divided allegiance rather than open neutrality.

And those who turn aside from the Lord, and those who have not sought the Lord, and those who have not held fast to the Lord.

Further indictmentκαὶ
A second participial triad describes apostasy negatively: turning back, refusing to seek, and refusing to cling. The cumulative picture is not accidental weakness but settled covenant abandonment.

Stand in awe before the Lord God, because the day of the Lord is near; because the Lord has prepared his sacrifice, he has consecrated his invited guests.

Summons before the sacrificial dayasyndeton
The hearers are summoned into fearful stillness before divine liturgy. The sacrificial metaphor turns the coming judgment into a prepared rite in which the Lord both offers and consecrates the agents of slaughter.

And I will punish in that day all who are openly upon the porches, those who fill the house of their Lord God with impiety and deceit.

Judgment on violent and deceitful worshipκαὶ
The Greek wording here diverges from the Masoretic threshold language, but the accusation is clear enough: public religious space has been filled with irreverence and fraud. Judgment reaches those whose cultic behavior masks violence and treachery.

And their strength shall be for plunder, and their houses for annihilation; they will build houses and shall certainly not inhabit them, and they will plant vineyards and shall certainly not drink their wine.

Covenant curse reversalκαὶ
The sentence borrows the logic of covenant curse traditions: labor will not yield secure enjoyment. Houses and vineyards become witnesses that privilege cannot withstand the day of visitation.
