Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The humble are urged to seek the Lord before wrath falls on Philistia, proud neighbors, and Nineveh.

Translation & textual notes

An urgent summons to gather, repent, and seek the Lord before the day of wrath arrives then widens into a ring of judgment sayings against the surrounding nations. The chapter moves from appeal to the humble of the land into oracles against Philistia, Moab, Ammon, Cush, and Assyria, showing that the Lord's day reaches both Judah's neighbors and the proud imperial centers beyond them. In the Greek, the sequence feels both pastoral and judicial: the meek are urged toward righteousness and shelter, while coastal settlements, taunting rivals, and self-secure Nineveh are stripped, depopulated, and turned into grazing-ground for beasts.
