The Book of Zephaniah, Chapter 3ΣΟΦΟΝΙΑΣ Γ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Jerusalem's rebellion gives way to purified worship, a humble remnant, and Zion's restored joy in the Lord.

Translation & textual notes

The book closes by moving from Jerusalem's rebellion and the corruption of her leaders to the Lord's own righteous intervention, then on to purified worship among the nations and Zion's restored joy. The Greek follows the standard Rahlfs-Hanhart text of the Septuagint Minor Prophets; several turns of phrase are characteristically Septuagintal, including the ironic address to the city in 3:1, the summons to wait for the Lord's rising in 3:8, and the promise that he will renew his people in his love in 3:17. The translation here therefore tracks the Greek discourse as it stands and leaves the chapter's distinctive LXX imagery visible rather than flattening it into the Masoretic form.

ὦ ἡ ἐπιφανὴς καὶ ἀπολελυτρωμένη ἡ πόλις ἡ περιστερά

Ah, the conspicuous and redeemed city, the dove!

Opening denunciationasyndeton
The chapter opens with a bitterly ironic address. The city that should have displayed covenant splendor and peace is instead named in terms that expose how far she has fallen.

οὐκ εἰσήκουσεν φωνῆς οὐκ ἐδέξατο παιδείαν ἐπὶ τῷ κυρίῳ οὐκ ἐπεποίθει καὶ πρὸς τὸν θεὸν αὐτῆς οὐκ ἤγγισεν

She did not listen to a voice; she did not accept discipline; in the Lord she did not trust, and to her God she did not draw near.

Catalog of covenant refusalasyndeton
The accusations move from hearing, to correction, to trust, to nearness. Jerusalem's failure is not merely moral but relational: she refuses every ordinary form of covenant response.

Civic leadership is described through ravenous animal imagery. Those charged to protect the city instead consume it so thoroughly that nothing remains by dawn.
