1 Chronicles 10ΠΑΡΑΛΕΙΠΟΜΕΝΩΝ Α′ Ι′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The Chronicler retells Saul's death from the Samuel tradition, but with a sharpened interest in theological explanation.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 1 Chronicles 10 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs–Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The Chronicler retells Saul's death from the Samuel tradition, but with a sharpened interest in theological explanation. Narrative details are concise: Philistine victory, the deaths of Saul's sons, Saul's wounding and self-killing, the abandonment of cities, and the dishonor done to his corpse. The decisive sentence comes at the end: Saul died for his trespass against the LORD, for not keeping the word, and also for consulting a medium. The chapter therefore functions as an interpretive threshold, not merely a battle report. David's rise will not be grounded in luck or opportunism but in the removal of a king who proved covenantally false. The Greek preserves the grim pace of the story and lets the closing explanation govern the whole account.

καὶ ἀλλόφυλοι ἐπολέμησαν πρὸς Ισραηλ καὶ ἔφυγον ἀπὸ προσώπου ἀλλοφύλων καὶ ἔπεσον τραυματίαι ἐν ὄρει Γελβουε

The Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines and fell wounded on Mount Gilboa.

Philistines rout Israel on Gilboaκαὶ ἀλλόφυλοι
The chapter opens with triple parataxis and no delay: defeat, flight, and the wounded dead come before interpretation. Gilboa is introduced as the field where Saul's house unravels.

Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, 'Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised men come and abuse me.' But his armor-bearer would not, for he feared greatly. So Saul took the sword and fell upon it.

Saul's self-killing after refusal of his armor-bearerκαὶ
Saul's request to his armor-bearer is driven by shame as much as fear: he dreads abuse from the uncircumcised more than death itself. The suicide marks the monarchy's end as self-inflicted humiliation under judgment.
