The First Book of Esdras, Chapter 6ΕΣΔΡΑΣ Α′ Ϛ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 1 Esdras 6 follows the Septuagint form preserved in the CCAT/CATSS morph source used for this project and corresponds broadly to the Ezra 5:1-6:12 restoration dossier, though 1 Esdras presents the material in its own Greek literary shape. A double movement from challenge to confirmation structures the chapter. Haggai and Zechariah restart the work (vv. 1-2), Persian officials question the builders but do not stop them (vv. 3-6), and the long inserted correspondence allows the Judean case to be stated in full historical and theological form (vv. 7-21). Darius’s archival search then discovers the earlier decree of Cyrus (vv. 22-25), and the king’s answer expands from simple authorization into active protection, funding, and sanctions against obstruction (vv. 26-33). Particularly important is the way the chapter binds prophetic word, imperial document, and temple worship together: the rebuilding is not legitimized by power alone, but by the convergence of divine initiative, remembered judgment, and publicly verifiable decree. The Greek narration is heavily documentary and paratactic, yet the chapter is far from dry record. It insists that bureaucratic procedure itself becomes one of the providential means by which the Lord secures the restoration of his house.

In the second year of the reign of Darius, Haggai and Zechariah son of Iddo, the prophets, prophesied over the Jews in Judea and Jerusalem in the name of the Lord God of Israel.

Chronological reopening under prophetic initiativeἐν δὲ
The chapter resumes the temple story by dating the scene to Darius and placing the decisive impulse in prophetic speech. Haggai and Zechariah frame rebuilding as an act carried forward under the divine name rather than as a merely civic project.

And this house had been built many years before by a great and mighty king of Israel, and it was finished.
