The Second Book of Chronicles, Chapter 11ΠΑΡΑΛΕΙΠΟΜΕΝΩΝ Β′ ΙΑ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Rehoboam is restrained from civil war and strengthens Judah as priests and worshipers gather around David's house.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 2 Chronicles 11 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter is structured by a striking reversal. Rehoboam begins with a plan to reverse the schism by force, but the prophetic word halts the campaign and attributes the division itself to the LORD's own judicial ordering. What follows is therefore not failed kingship but redirected kingship: Rehoboam fortifies Judah and Benjamin, stocks strategic cities, and receives an influx of priests, Levites, and other northerners who refuse Jeroboam's illegitimate cult. The migration notice is the theological center of the chapter. Judah becomes stronger not merely because of walls and weapons but because proper worship and covenantal loyalty are concentrating there. The concluding marriage and succession data are politically important as well. They show Rehoboam managing dynastic continuity inside the reduced kingdom, even while the narrative quietly reminds the reader that multiplication of wives and household maneuvering belong to the ambiguous inheritance of the Solomonic house.

καὶ ἦλθεν Ροβοαμ εἰς Ιερουσαλημ καὶ ἐξεκκλησίασεν τὸν Ιουδαν καὶ Βενιαμιν ἑκατὸν ὀγδοήκοντα χιλιάδας νεανίσκων ποιούντων πόλεμον καὶ ἐπολέμει πρὸς Ισραηλ τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι τὴν βασιλείαν τῷ Ροβοαμ

And Rehoboam came to Jerusalem and assembled Judah and Benjamin, one hundred eighty thousand young men fit for war, to fight against Israel and restore the kingdom to Rehoboam.

Rehoboam mobilizes to reverse the schismκαὶ ἦλθεν Ροβοαμ
The chapter opens with an attempted military undoing of the division. Rehoboam’s first instinct is reconquest, not submission to the judgment already at work.
