The Second Book of Chronicles, Chapter 12ΠΑΡΑΛΕΙΠΟΜΕΝΩΝ Β′ ΙΒ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Rehoboam's pride brings Egyptian invasion, and only humiliation wins Judah a partial reprieve.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 2 Chronicles 12 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter is built on one of Chronicles' characteristic reversals: establishment leads to self-confidence, self-confidence to apostasy, and apostasy to invasion. Shishak's attack is not merely international history but prophetic interpretation in event form. Shemaiah's indictment makes the logic explicit: 'you abandoned me, and I will abandon you into the hand of Shishak.' Yet the chapter equally stresses that humble confession alters the mode of judgment. Jerusalem is not annihilated, but its glory is diminished. The exchange of Solomon's golden shields for bronze ones is the chapter's vivid emblem of decline: the kingdom continues, but with a visibly reduced splendor and under the pedagogy of subjection. The final verdict explains why the reprieve remains limited. Rehoboam did evil, not because no reforms or moments of contrition occurred, but because he never fixed his heart to seek the LORD.

Chronicles often treats security as a test. Once Rehoboam feels settled, fidelity gives way to presumption, and the people follow him.
