The Second Book of Chronicles, Chapter 14ΠΑΡΑΛΕΙΠΟΜΕΝΩΝ Β′ ΙΔ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Asa reforms Judah, enjoys rest, and learns in battle that help belongs to the Lord rather than numbers.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 2 Chronicles 14 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter should be read as a coherent theological sequence. Asa removes foreign altars and sacred installations, commands Judah to seek the LORD and keep the law, and then makes use of the resulting peace to fortify strategic cities. Rest in Chronicles is therefore never mere inactivity. It is gift, but gift that invites disciplined preparation under obedience. The arrival of Zerah the Ethiopian tests whether that preparation has become self-reliance. Asa's prayer answers decisively: the LORD can save 'by many or by few,' and the decisive issue is whether man will prevail against God. The battle is narrated tersely after that prayer because the prayer itself is the interpretive center. The ensuing rout and plunder show that the same LORD who granted rest also grants victory, and that true royal strength lies in seeking him rather than in trusting sheer scale or military capacity.
