Theme

Jehoshaphat strengthens Judah through reform, teaching, and ordered power rooted in seeking the Lord.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 2 Chronicles 17 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. This chapter presents Jehoshaphat as the positive counterpoint to Asa's late failure. The opening notices combine piety, administrative intelligence, and military preparedness, but the center of the chapter is not the army list; it is the teaching mission that carries the book of the law throughout Judah. The Chronicler's logic is that secure kingship is sustained by instructed covenant life. Peace among the nations, incoming tribute, and an impressive military roster are therefore narrated as consequences of a reign ordered by divine seeking, reform, and pedagogy rather than by anxious improvisation.
