Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 2 Chronicles 29 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Chapter 29 is the deliberate reversal of Ahaz's shutdown of worship in chapter 28. Hezekiah opens the temple doors in the first month of his reign and repairs them (v. 3), then summons priests and Levites to sanctify themselves and remove the impurity from the holy place (vv. 4-5). His speech interprets Judah's recent disasters as the fruit of cultic abandonment: the lamps were extinguished, incense ceased, and burnt offerings were not brought in the sanctuary (vv. 6-9). The cleansing of the house is narrated with logistical precision and culminates in a royal report that the altar, the table of showbread, and the defiled vessels have all been restored (vv. 15-19). The second half of the chapter turns to sacrifice and praise. Sin offerings are made on behalf of the kingdom, the sanctuary, and all Israel, while Levitical music is reestablished according to the command of David, Gad, and Nathan, explicitly described as a command of the Lord through the prophets (vv. 21-30). The chapter closes with freewill offerings, an overabundance of sacrifices, and the striking note that the Levites proved more ready in sanctifying themselves than the priests (v. 34). Restoration is therefore presented as both divinely prepared and communally enacted, and its visible fruit is gladness.
