Hezekiah faces Assyria with prayer and preparation, and the Lord defends Jerusalem against Sennacherib.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 2 Chronicles 32 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter combines military crisis, theological polemic, miraculous deliverance, and royal self-exposure. Sennacherib's invasion is narrated not simply as war but as a contest of trusts: Hezekiah's preparations are practical, yet his central exhortation insists that the decisive difference lies between an 'arm of flesh' and the LORD who fights for his people. The Assyrian speeches are especially important. Their logic reduces Judah's God to one more defeated national deity and treats Hezekiah's centralization of worship as sacrilege rather than obedience. The prayer of Hezekiah and Isaiah answers that blasphemy, and the angelic judgment publicly reverses Assyrian boasting. The second half of the chapter then complicates any simplistic triumphalism. The healed king can still become proud, and the Babylonian embassy becomes a divinely permitted test of what lies in his heart. Chronicles therefore presents Hezekiah as both exemplary and vulnerable: a faithful king whose greatest military vindication does not eliminate the need for humility.

After these matters and this faithfulness, Sennacherib king of the Assyrians came and invaded Judah, encamped against the fortified cities, and intended to break into them for himself.

Faithfulness is followed by imperial testingκαὶ μετὰ
Chronicles deliberately places the invasion after Hezekiah's proven fidelity, making the crisis a test of trust rather than a punishment for apostasy.

And Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the ascent of the tombs of the sons of David, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem gave him honor at his death. And Manasseh his son reigned in his place.

The king receives an honored burial and a dynastic handoffκαὶ ἐκοιμήθη
The burial notice contrasts sharply with dishonored kings elsewhere in Chronicles. Hezekiah's memory closes in public esteem, though his successor will reverse much of his work.
