2 Chronicles 33ΠΑΡΑΛΕΙΠΟΜΕΝΩΝ Β′ ΛΓ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Theme

Manasseh descends into extreme evil yet finds mercy through humiliation, while Amon repeats only the evil.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 2 Chronicles 33 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. This chapter is one of Chronicles' most distinctive theological narratives, especially because of Manasseh's repentance, which is absent from the parallel in 4 Kingdoms/2 Kings. The first half intensifies royal apostasy to an almost maximal level: high places are rebuilt, Baal and Asherah are restored, the host of heaven is worshiped, children are made to pass through fire, and the temple itself is desecrated by an image placed in the house that bears the divine name. Yet the judgment of captivity is not merely punitive. In Babylon the king's humiliation becomes the place where he learns who the LORD is. Chronicles thus pushes beyond a simple sin-judgment pattern toward a theology of repentance after catastrophe. Even so, restoration is partial. Manasseh can remove idols and repair the altar, but the people still sacrifice at high places. The brief reign of Amon then underscores the fragility of reform when humility is absent.

The contrast between divine election and human fabrication gives the act its full horror. The temple is asked to host what God forbids.
