The Second Book of Chronicles, Chapter 7ΠΑΡΑΛΕΙΠΟΜΕΝΩΝ Β′ Ζ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Fire and glory confirm the temple, but God's answer binds the house to humility, obedience, and repentance.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 2 Chronicles 7 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter narrates the answer to Solomon's prayer in two phases: first public and visible, then nocturnal and interpretive. Fire descends from heaven, consumes the sacrifices, and the glory of the Lord fills the house so fully that the priests cannot enter. The celebration that follows is immense, but Chronicles is careful to frame it liturgically through priests, Levites, musical instruments, and the great seven-day feast. The night appearance to Solomon then interprets the event theologically: the chosen place is a house of sacrifice, repentance can reopen the heavens, and the Davidic throne remains conditioned by covenant loyalty. The final warning gives the chapter its edge. The temple is no talisman. If Israel abandons the Lord, the very house sanctified for the divine name can become a byword of judgment among the nations.

καὶ ὡς συνετέλεσεν Σαλωμων προσευχόμενος καὶ τὸ πῦρ κατέβη ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ κατέφαγεν τὰ ὁλοκαυτώματα καὶ τὰς θυσίας καὶ δόξα κυρίου ἔπλησεν τὸν οἶκον

And when Solomon finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the whole burnt offerings and the sacrifices, and the glory of the Lord filled the house.

Public answer from heaven to Solomon's prayerκαὶ ὡς συνετέλεσεν Σαλωμων
The response is immediate and visible: heaven answers by fire, not merely by inward assurance. Sacrifice and glory together show divine acceptance of the dedication.
