The Second Book of Chronicles, Chapter 9ΠΑΡΑΛΕΙΠΟΜΕΝΩΝ Β′ Θ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Solomon's wisdom and wealth draw the nations, and his reign reaches its height before the coming fracture.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of 2 Chronicles 9 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter is Solomon at full international radiance. The queen of Sheba comes not simply to admire riches but to test wisdom, and her verdict joins political astonishment to theological recognition: the God who set Solomon on the throne has done so out of love for Israel. Chronicles then turns from narrative scene to imperial inventory, listing annual gold intake, ceremonial shields, the ivory throne, fleets, luxury imports, and the daily traffic of gifts from kings who seek Solomon's face. The result is not merely a chronicle of opulence. In the Chronicler's theological idiom, ordered worship, divinely given wisdom, and royal abundance belong together. The closing source citations and burial formula keep even this peak of magnificence inside the discipline of remembered history.

And the queen of Sheba heard of the name of Solomon and came to test Solomon with riddles in Jerusalem, with a very heavy retinue and camels bearing spices and gold in great abundance and precious stone; and she came to Solomon and spoke with him all that was in her soul.

An international test of Solomon's wisdom beginsκαὶ βασίλισσα Σαβα ἤκουσεν
The queen arrives as an examiner, not a tourist. The lavish caravan underscores distance and seriousness, while her speaking 'all that was in her soul' gives the scene personal intensity.
