The Second Book of Maccabees, Chapter 7ΜΑΚΚΑΒΑΙΩΝ Β′ Ζ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

A mother and her seven sons face torture and death rather than betray the law and the hope of resurrection.

Translation & textual notes

2 Maccabees 7 concentrates the persecution under Antiochus into a single exemplary scene: a mother and her seven sons are compelled to choose between apostasy and torture. The chapter moves from arrest and public mutilation into a sequence of increasingly explicit martyr confessions, and each death sharpens the book's theology of covenant loyalty, divine justice, and resurrection. The mother's central speech grounds the sons' courage in creation theology: the God who fashioned life from nothing can restore life again. By the end of the chapter the martyrs' suffering is framed not as defeat but as witness, discipline for Israel, and a means by which the wrath resting on the nation may come to its limit.

Arrest and coercionasyndeton
The chapter opens by compressing the persecution into a single emblematic family. Royal force is aimed not merely at bodies but at covenant identity through compelled defilement.
