The Second Book of Maccabees, Chapter 7ΜΑΚΚΑΒΑΙΩΝ Β′ Ζ′

συνέβη δὲ καὶ ἑπτὰ ἀδελφοὺς μετὰ τῆς μητρὸς συλλημφθέντας ἀναγκάζεσθαι ὑπὸ τοῦ βασιλέως ἀπὸ τῶν ἀθεμίτων ὑείων κρεῶν ἐφάπτεσθαι μάστιξιν καὶ νευραῖς αἰκιζομένους

And it happened that seven brothers also, together with their mother, having been arrested, were being forced by the king to partake of unlawful pork, while they were being tortured with whips and cords.

εἷς δὲ αὐτῶν γενόμενος προήγορος οὕτως ἔφη τί μέλλεις ἐρωτᾶν καὶ μανθάνειν ἡμῶν ἕτοιμοι γὰρ ἀποθνῄσκειν ἐσμὲν ἢ παραβαίνειν τοὺς πατρίους νόμους

And one of them, becoming their spokesman, said as follows, 'What do you intend to ask and learn from us? For we are ready to die rather than transgress the ancestral laws.'

ἔκθυμος δὲ γενόμενος ὁ βασιλεὺς προσέταξεν τήγανα καὶ λέβητας ἐκπυροῦν

Then the king, becoming enraged, ordered frying pans and cauldrons to be heated.

τῶν δὲ παραχρῆμα ἐκπυρωθέντων τὸν γενόμενον αὐτῶν προήγορον προσέταξεν γλωσσοτομεῖν καὶ περισκυθίσαντας ἀκρωτηριάζειν τῶν λοιπῶν ἀδελφῶν καὶ τῆς μητρὸς συνορώντων

And when these had been heated at once, he ordered the one who had become their spokesman to have his tongue cut out, and after scalping him, to mutilate him while the rest of the brothers and the mother looked on.

ἄχρηστον δὲ αὐτὸν τοῖς ὅλοις γενόμενον ἐκέλευσεν τῇ πυρᾷ προσάγειν ἔμπνουν καὶ τηγανίζειν τῆς δὲ ἀτμίδος ἐφ' ἱκανὸν διαδιδούσης τοῦ τηγάνου ἀλλήλους παρεκάλουν σὺν τῇ μητρὶ γενναίως τελευτᾶν λέγοντες οὕτως

And when he had been rendered utterly useless, the king ordered that he, still breathing, be brought to the fire and fried in the pan; and as the vapor from the pan spread abroad in full measure, they encouraged one another with their mother to die nobly, saying thus:

ὁ κύριος ὁ θεὸς ἐφορᾷ καὶ ταῖς ἀληθείαις ἐφ' ἡμῖν παρακαλεῖται καθάπερ διὰ τῆς κατὰ πρόσωπον ἀντιμαρτυρούσης ᾠδῆς διεσάφησεν Μωυσῆς λέγων καὶ ἐπὶ τοῖς δούλοις αὐτοῦ παρακληθήσεται

'The Lord God is watching, and in truth he is moved with compassion toward us, just as Moses made clear in the song that testifies openly, saying, "And he will be moved concerning his servants."'

μεταλλάξαντος δὲ τοῦ πρώτου τὸν τρόπον τοῦτον τὸν δεύτερον ἦγον ἐπὶ τὸν ἐμπαιγμὸν καὶ τὸ τῆς κεφαλῆς δέρμα σὺν ταῖς θριξὶν περισύραντες ἐπηρώτων εἰ φάγεσαι πρὸ τοῦ τιμωρηθῆναι τὸ σῶμα κατὰ μέλος

And when the first had died in this manner, they were bringing the second to the mockery; and after tearing off the skin of his head together with the hair, they were asking whether he would eat before his body was punished limb by limb.

ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς τῇ πατρίῳ φωνῇ προσεῖπεν οὐχί διόπερ καὶ οὗτος τὴν ἑξῆς ἔλαβεν βάσανον ὡς ὁ πρῶτος

But he answered in the ancestral language and said, 'No.' Therefore this one also received the next torture, like the first.

ἐν ἐσχάτῃ δὲ πνοῇ γενόμενος εἶπεν σὺ μέν ἀλάστωρ ἐκ τοῦ παρόντος ἡμᾶς ζῆν ἀπολύεις ὁ δὲ τοῦ κόσμου βασιλεὺς ἀποθανόντας ἡμᾶς ὑπὲρ τῶν αὐτοῦ νόμων εἰς αἰώνιον ἀναβίωσιν ζωῆς ἡμᾶς ἀναστήσει

And when he came to his last breath, he said, 'You accursed wretch, you release us from the present life, but the King of the world will raise us up, who have died for his laws, into an everlasting renewal of life.'

μετὰ δὲ τοῦτον ὁ τρίτος ἐνεπαίζετο καὶ τὴν γλῶσσαν αἰτηθεὶς ταχέως προέβαλεν καὶ τὰς χεῖρας εὐθαρσῶς προέτεινεν

After him the third was mocked; and when asked for his tongue, he quickly put it out and bravely stretched forth his hands.

καὶ γενναίως εἶπεν ἐξ οὐρανοῦ ταῦτα κέκτημαι καὶ διὰ τοὺς αὐτοῦ νόμους ὑπερορῶ ταῦτα καὶ παρ' αὐτοῦ ταῦτα πάλιν ἐλπίζω κομίσασθαι

And he said courageously, 'From heaven I received these, and because of his laws I disregard them, and from him I hope to receive them back again.'

ὥστε αὐτὸν τὸν βασιλέα καὶ τοὺς σὺν αὐτῷ ἐκπλήσσεσθαι τὴν τοῦ νεανίσκου ψυχήν ὡς ἐν οὐδενὶ τὰς ἀλγηδόνας ἐτίθετο

So that the king himself and those with him were astonished at the young man's spirit, because he regarded the sufferings as nothing.

καὶ τούτου δὲ μεταλλάξαντος τὸν τέταρτον ὡσαύτως ἐβασάνιζον αἰκιζόμενοι

And when this one also had died, they were torturing and maltreating the fourth in the same way.

καὶ γενόμενος πρὸς τὸ τελευτᾶν οὕτως ἔφη αἱρετὸν μεταλλάσσοντας ὑπ' ἀνθρώπων τὰς ὑπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ προσδοκᾶν ἐλπίδας πάλιν ἀναστήσεσθαι ὑπ' αὐτοῦ σοὶ μὲν γὰρ ἀνάστασις εἰς ζωὴν οὐκ ἔσται

And when he was about to die he said thus, 'It is preferable, when dying at the hands of men, to await the hopes given by God, namely to be raised up again by him; but for you there will be no resurrection to life.'

ἐχομένως δὲ τὸν πέμπτον προσάγοντες ᾐκίζοντο

Next they brought the fifth forward and were torturing him.

ὁ δὲ πρὸς αὐτὸν ἰδὼν εἶπεν ἐξουσίαν ἐν ἀνθρώποις ἔχων φθαρτὸς ὢν ὃ θέλεις ποιεῖς μὴ δόκει δὲ τὸ γένος ἡμῶν ὑπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ καταλελεῖφθαι

But he, looking at the king, said, 'Though you are mortal, you have authority among human beings and do whatever you wish; but do not suppose that our race has been abandoned by God.'

σὺ δὲ καρτέρει καὶ θεώρει τὸ μεγαλεῖον αὐτοῦ κράτος ὡς σὲ καὶ τὸ σπέρμα σου βασανιεῖ

'But you, wait and see his great might, how he will torment you and your offspring.'

μετὰ δὲ τοῦτον ἦγον τὸν ἕκτον καὶ μέλλων ἀποθνῄσκειν ἔφη μὴ πλανῶ μάτην ἡμεῖς γὰρ δι' ἑαυτοὺς ταῦτα πάσχομεν ἁμαρτόντες εἰς τὸν ἑαυτῶν θεόν ἄξια θαυμασμοῦ γέγονεν

After him they were bringing the sixth; and as he was about to die, he said, 'Do not be deceived in vain. For we are suffering these things on our own account, because we sinned against our own God; therefore astonishing things have come to pass.'

σὺ δὲ μὴ νομίσῃς ἀθῷος ἔσεσθαι θεομαχεῖν ἐπιχειρήσας

'But you, do not suppose that you will be guiltless after undertaking to fight against God.'

ὑπεραγόντως δὲ ἡ μήτηρ θαυμαστὴ καὶ μνήμης ἀγαθῆς ἀξία ἥτις ἀπολλυμένους υἱοὺς ἑπτὰ συνορῶσα μιᾶς ὑπὸ καιρὸν ἡμέρας εὐψύχως ἔφερεν διὰ τὰς ἐπὶ κύριον ἐλπίδας

Now the mother was especially admirable and worthy of honored memory, for though she saw seven sons destroyed within the space of one day, she bore it bravely because of her hopes in the Lord.

ἕκαστον δὲ αὐτῶν παρεκάλει τῇ πατρίῳ φωνῇ γενναίῳ πεπληρωμένη φρονήματι καὶ τὸν θῆλυν λογισμὸν ἄρσενι θυμῷ διεγείρασα λέγουσα πρὸς αὐτούς

And she was encouraging each one of them in the ancestral language, filled with a noble spirit, and by stirring womanly reasoning with manly courage she said to them:

οὐκ οἶδ' ὅπως εἰς τὴν ἐμὴν ἐφάνητε κοιλίαν οὐδὲ ἐγὼ τὸ πνεῦμα καὶ τὴν ζωὴν ὑμῖν ἐχαρισάμην καὶ τὴν ἑκάστου στοιχείωσιν οὐκ ἐγὼ διερρύθμισα

'I do not know how you appeared in my womb, nor was it I who graciously gave you spirit and life, nor was it I who arranged the composition of each one of you.'

τοιγαροῦν ὁ τοῦ κόσμου κτίστης ὁ πλάσας ἀνθρώπου γένεσιν καὶ πάντων ἐξευρὼν γένεσιν καὶ τὸ πνεῦμα καὶ τὴν ζωὴν ὑμῖν πάλιν ἀποδίδωσιν μετ' ἐλέους ὡς νῦν ὑπερορᾶτε ἑαυτοὺς διὰ τοὺς αὐτοῦ νόμους

'Therefore the Creator of the world, who formed the origin of humanity and devised the generation of all things, will in mercy give both spirit and life back to you again, because you now disregard yourselves for the sake of his laws.'

ὁ δὲ Ἀντίοχος οἰόμενος καταφρονεῖσθαι καὶ τὴν ὀνειδίζουσαν ὑφορώμενος φωνὴν ἔτι τοῦ νεωτέρου περιόντος οὐ μόνον διὰ λόγων ἐποιεῖτο τὴν παράκλησιν ἀλλὰ καὶ δι' ὅρκων ἐπίστου ἅμα πλουτιεῖν καὶ μακαριστὸν ποιήσειν μεταθέμενον ἀπὸ τῶν πατρίων καὶ φίλον ἕξειν καὶ χρείας ἐμπιστεύσειν

But Antiochus, supposing that he was being despised and suspecting the reproachful tone of voice, while the youngest was still alive, was not only making an appeal by words but also solemnly assuring him with oaths that, if he turned away from the ancestral customs, he would make him rich and enviable, would treat him as a friend, and would entrust him with offices.

τοῦ δὲ νεανίου μηδαμῶς προσέχοντος προσκαλεσάμενος ὁ βασιλεὺς τὴν μητέρα παρῄνει γενέσθαι τοῦ μειρακίου σύμβουλον ἐπὶ σωτηρίᾳ

But since the young man was paying no attention at all, the king called the mother to him and urged her to become an adviser to the youth for his safety.

πολλὰ δὲ αὐτοῦ παραινέσαντος ἐπεδέξατο πείσειν τὸν υἱόν

And after he had urged her at length, she undertook to persuade her son.

προσκύψασα δὲ αὐτῷ χλευάσασα τὸν ὠμὸν τύραννον οὕτως ἔφησεν τῇ πατρίῳ φωνῇ υἱέ ἐλέησόν με τὴν ἐν γαστρὶ περιενέγκασάν σε μῆνας ἐννέα καὶ θηλάσασάν σε ἔτη τρία καὶ ἐκθρέψασάν σε καὶ ἀγαγοῦσαν εἰς τὴν ἡλικίαν ταύτην καὶ τροφοφορήσασαν

And stooping toward him, while mocking the cruel tyrant, she spoke thus in the ancestral language: 'My son, have pity on me, who carried you in the womb for nine months and nursed you for three years, and reared you and brought you to this age and sustained you.'

ἀξιῶ σε τέκνον ἀναβλέψαντα εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ τὴν γῆν καὶ τὰ ἐν αὐτοῖς πάντα ἰδόντα γνῶναι ὅτι οὐκ ἐξ ὄντων ἐποίησεν αὐτὰ ὁ θεός καὶ τὸ τῶν ἀνθρώπων γένος οὕτω γίνεται

'I urge you, child, to look at the heaven and the earth and, seeing all that is in them, to know that God made them not out of things that existed, and that the human race likewise comes into being in this way.'

μὴ φοβηθῇς τὸν δήμιον τοῦτον ἀλλὰ τῶν ἀδελφῶν ἄξιος γενόμενος ἐπίδεξαι τὸν θάνατον ἵνα ἐν τῷ ἐλέει σὺν τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς σου κομίσωμαί σε

'Do not fear this executioner, but, proving yourself worthy of your brothers, accept death, so that in mercy I may receive you back again together with your brothers.'

ἔτι δὲ ταύτης καταληγούσης ὁ νεανίας εἶπεν τίνα μένετε οὐχ ὑπακούω τοῦ προστάγματος τοῦ βασιλέως τοῦ δὲ προστάγματος ἀκούω τοῦ νόμου τοῦ δοθέντος τοῖς πατράσιν ἡμῶν διὰ Μωυσέως

And while she was still finishing, the young man said, 'What are you waiting for? I do not obey the command of the king, but I obey the command of the law that was given to our fathers through Moses.'

σὺ δὲ πάσης κακίας εὑρετὴς γενόμενος εἰς τοὺς Εβραίους οὐ μὴ διαφύγῃς τὰς χεῖρας τοῦ θεοῦ

'But you, who have become the inventor of every evil against the Hebrews, will certainly not escape the hands of God.'

ἡμεῖς γὰρ διὰ τὰς ἑαυτῶν ἁμαρτίας πάσχομεν

'For we are suffering on account of our own sins.'

εἰ δὲ χάριν ἐπιπλήξεως καὶ παιδείας ὁ ζῶν κύριος ἡμῶν βραχέως ἐπώργισται καὶ πάλιν καταλλαγήσεται τοῖς ἑαυτοῦ δούλοις

'And if our living Lord has become angry for a little while for the sake of rebuke and discipline, he will be reconciled again with his own servants.'

σὺ δέ ὦ ἀνόσιε καὶ πάντων ἀνθρώπων μιαρώτατε μὴ μάτην μετεωρίζου φρυαττόμενος ἀδήλοις ἐλπίσιν ἐπὶ τοὺς οὐρανίους παῖδας ἐπαιρόμενος χεῖρα

'But you, O unholy man and most defiled of all men, do not be vainly exalted, swelling with uncertain hopes, while you raise your hand against the children of heaven.'

οὔπω γὰρ τὴν τοῦ παντοκράτορος ἐπόπτου θεοῦ κρίσιν ἐκπέφευγας

'For you have not yet escaped the judgment of the Almighty, the all-seeing God.'

οἱ μὲν γὰρ νῦν ἡμέτεροι ἀδελφοὶ βραχὺν ὑπενέγκαντες πόνον ἀενάου ζωῆς ὑπὸ διαθήκην θεοῦ πεπτώκασιν σὺ δὲ τῇ τοῦ θεοῦ κρίσει δίκαια τὰ πρόστιμα τῆς ὑπερηφανίας ἀποίσῃ

'For our brothers, after enduring a brief pain, have fallen asleep under God's covenant unto everlasting life; but you, by the judgment of God, will bear the just penalties of your arrogance.'

ἐγὼ δέ καθάπερ οἱ ἀδελφοί καὶ σῶμα καὶ ψυχὴν προδίδωμι περὶ τῶν πατρίων νόμων ἐπικαλούμενος τὸν θεὸν ἵλεως ταχὺ τῷ ἔθνει γενέσθαι καὶ σὲ μετὰ ἐτασμῶν καὶ μαστίγων ἐξομολογήσασθαι διότι μόνος αὐτὸς θεός ἐστιν

'But I, like my brothers, surrender body and life for the ancestral laws, calling upon God to become merciful again to the nation quickly, and to make you confess through torments and scourges that he alone is God.'

ἐν ἐμοὶ δὲ καὶ τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς μου στῆσαι τὴν τοῦ παντοκράτορος ὀργὴν τὴν ἐπὶ τὸ σύμπαν ἡμῶν γένος δικαίως ἐπηγμένην

'And through me and my brothers may the wrath of the Almighty, which has justly been brought upon our whole nation, come to a stop.'

ἔκθυμος δὲ γενόμενος ὁ βασιλεὺς τούτῳ παρὰ τοὺς ἄλλους χειρίστως ἀπήντησεν πικρῶς φέρων ἐπὶ τῷ μυκτηρισμῷ

Then the king, becoming enraged, dealt with this one more savagely than the others, because he took the taunt bitterly.

καὶ οὗτος οὖν καθαρὸς μετήλλαξεν παντελῶς ἐπὶ τῷ κυρίῳ πεποιθώς

So this one also died in complete purity, having placed his trust wholly in the Lord.

ἐσχάτη δὲ τῶν υἱῶν ἡ μήτηρ ἐτελεύτησεν

Last of all, after her sons, the mother died.

τὰ μὲν οὖν περὶ τοὺς σπλαγχνισμοὺς καὶ τὰς ὑπερβαλλούσας αἰκίας ἐπὶ τοσοῦτον δεδηλώσθω

Let what concerns the butchery and the extraordinary tortures, then, be made clear to this extent.
