The Second Book of Maccabees, Chapter 8ΜΑΚΚΑΒΑΙΩΝ Β′ Η′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Judas gathers the faithful, defeats Nicanor's designs, and turns divine wrath into public deliverance.

Translation & textual notes

Judas Maccabaeus' consolidation of the resistance, the community's appeal for divine mercy after desecration and bloodshed, the defeat of Nicanor's slave-raiding campaign, and the theological reversal by which the Lord's wrath gives way to public deliverance are narrated here in tight sequence. The chapter closes by showing that military success, Sabbath observance, care for the afflicted, and the humiliation of arrogant enemies are all interpreted as signs of God's active patronage of the Judean cause.

But Judas, also called Maccabaeus, and those with him, moving secretly through the villages, kept calling in their kinsmen, and by gathering those who had remained loyal to Judaism they assembled about six thousand.

And he quickly selected Nicanor, the son of Patroclus, one of the chief Friends, and sent him out, placing under him peoples of every sort numbering no fewer than twenty thousand, to wipe out entirely the whole race of Judea; and he attached to him also Gorgias, a general and a man experienced in matters of war.

narrative-developmentasyndeton
The opposition is formidable and intentionally totalizing: the goal is not merely suppression but the eradication of Judea's people. Gorgias' military experience heightens the threat.
