The Fourth Book of Maccabees, Chapter 8ΜΑΚΚΑΒΑΙΩΝ Δ′ Η′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The seven brothers and their mother are brought before Antiochus, whose flattery, threats, and torture devices only sharpen the contrast between tyrannical power and the brothers' reasoned resolve.

Translation & textual notes

The book shifts here from Eleazar to the seven brothers and their mother, narrating the tyrant's calculated attempt to win or terrify the youths into apostasy. The chapter heightens the philosophical argument by contrasting the king's seductive rhetoric and elaborate instruments of torture with the brothers' unified, reasoned refusal, thereby presenting youthful courage as another arena in which pious reason rules fear and pain.

διὰ τοῦτό γέ τοι καὶ μειρακίσκοι τῷ τῆς εὐσεβείας λογισμῷ φιλοσοφοῦντες χαλεπωτέρων βασανιστηρίων ἐπεκράτησαν

For this reason, then, even young men, philosophizing by the reasoning of piety, proved stronger than harsher tortures.

transition from Eleazar to the younger martyrsasyndeton
The argument moves from the elder to the youths without changing its thesis. The same pious reasoning is shown to govern even those at the beginning of life.

For when the tyrant was plainly defeated in the first trial, being unable to compel an old man to eat defiling food, he then in deep agitation ordered others from among the Hebrew captives to be brought, and if they should eat defiling food they were to be released after eating, but if they objected they were to be tortured more bitterly.
