The Book of Amos, Chapter 2ΑΜΩΣ Β′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Judgment closes on Judah and especially Israel, whose covenant sins are exposed.

Translation & textual notes

The opening cycle of oracles against the nations is completed and then turned with its sharpest scrutiny toward Judah and Israel. The chapter moves from judgments on Moab and Judah into a sustained accusation against Israel's social predation, cultic corruption, and rejection of prophetic and consecrated witnesses. It also balances accusation with covenant memory: the Lord reminds Israel that he destroyed the Amorite, brought them up from Egypt, and raised up prophets and holy ones among them, so that the final collapse of human strength appears not arbitrary but morally and historically grounded.

Thus says the Lord: For the three impieties of Moab, and for the four, I will not turn him away, because they burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime.

Oracleasyndeton
The Moab oracle closes the opening foreign-nation cycle with an act of desecrating vengeance. Burning a royal corpse into lime becomes a symbolic outrage that merits irreversible judgment.

Oracleasyndeton
The turn to Judah is morally piercing because it focuses on covenant rejection rather than military cruelty. Judah's sin lies in refusing the Lord's teaching and following inherited falsehoods.
