Theme

Luxury, oppression, and repeated refusals to return leave Israel facing its God.

Translation & textual notes

A sustained indictment of Samaria's luxurious violence and Israel's stubborn refusal to return to the Lord despite repeated chastisements drives this chapter. It opens with the infamous address to the 'cows of Bashan,' wealthy women in Samaria whose comfort depends on the oppression of the poor. It then moves through a sequence of covenant curses already experienced by the nation: famine, drought, blight, pestilence, military loss, and near-overthrow like Sodom. Each stroke is punctuated by the refrain that Israel still did not turn back. The chapter closes by shifting from retrospective chastisement to direct summons: Israel must prepare to meet its God, the Lord who forms, creates, reveals, and strides over the heights of the earth. The Greek preserves the mocking force of the cultic satire and the liturgical rhythm of the repeated refusal to repent.
