The Book of Amos, Chapter 7ΑΜΩΣ Ζ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Visions, intercession, the plumb line, and Amaziah define Amos's hard calling.

Translation & textual notes

A carefully staged chapter of visions, intercession, symbolic judgment, and prophetic conflict begins with the first two visions, of locusts and consuming fire, interrupted by Amos's plea for Jacob's survival, and in both cases the Lord relents, underscoring the prophet's mediating role as well as Israel's fragility. The third vision shifts from relented judgment to fixed assessment: the Lord sets an adamant or plumb-line-like standard in the midst of Israel and announces that the high places, sanctuaries, and royal house will no longer be spared. The chapter then turns narrative, as Amaziah priest of Bethel denounces Amos before Jeroboam and tries to expel him; Amos answers by grounding his call directly in divine initiative and concludes with a personal judgment oracle against Amaziah that mirrors the broader sentence against Israel.

Thus the Lord showed me: and behold, a brood of locusts was coming in the morning, and behold, one caterpillar, Gog the king.

First vision introducedοὕτως
The chapter opens with a visionary report formula. The imagery is agricultural and ominous from the start, and the locust growth is presented as a royal-scale threat to the land's survival.

Amos interrupts the vision with direct plea. The argument is not Israel's innocence but Jacob's weakness: survival depends on divine mercy because the people are too diminished to recover on their own.

καὶ ἀνέλαβέν με κύριος ἐκ τῶν προβάτων καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρός με βάδιζε προφήτευσον ἐπὶ τὸν λαόν μου Ισραηλ

And the Lord took me from the sheep, and the Lord said to me, 'Go, prophesy to my people Israel.'

Ground of Amos's callingκαὶ
The prophet locates his commission in the Lord's seizure and sending. This appeal to direct vocation answers Amaziah's dismissal more forcefully than any self-defense based on status could.

Therefore thus says the Lord: your wife shall become a prostitute in the city, and your sons and your daughters shall fall by the sword, and your land shall be measured out by line, and you shall die in an unclean land, and Israel shall surely be led away captive from its land.

Final sentence against Amaziah and Israelδιὰ
The final oracle personalizes national judgment. Household disgrace, violent loss, confiscated land, death in uncleanness, and exile together show that resisting the word does not avert the sentence but brings it home with sharper precision.
