The Book of Amos, Chapter 8ΑΜΩΣ Η′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

The basket of summer fruit ripens Israel for famine and final judgment.

Translation & textual notes

A simple vision of fruit is turned into a hard announcement that Israel's time has ripened into judgment. The chapter binds together several strands already present in the book: commercial oppression of the poor, the desecration of sacred time by greed, cosmic disturbance as a sign of the Lord's intervention, and finally the terrible reversal in which a people who ignored the prophetic word begin desperately searching for it and cannot find it. Its rhetoric is both forensic and liturgical, moving from accusation to mourning language and from market fraud to a famine not of bread but of hearing the word of the Lord.

1

οὕτως ἔδειξέν μοι κύριος καὶ ἰδοὺ ἄγγος ἰξευτοῦ

Thus the Lord showed me, and behold, a vessel of summer fruit.

Vision reportasyndeton
The vision is deliberately ordinary in surface appearance. Its ripeness prepares the verbal turn by which summer fruit becomes a sign that Israel's time has reached its end.

And he said, 'What do you see, Amos?' And I said, 'A vessel of summer fruit.' And the Lord said to me, 'The end has come upon my people Israel; I will no longer continue to pass by them.'

Vision interpretationasyndeton
The Lord interprets the image directly for Amos. The punning movement from ripe fruit to final end sharpens the sense that judgment is now mature and irreversible.
