The Book of Esther, Chapter 2ΕΣΘΗΡ Β′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Esther rises through the machinery of the Persian court while Mordecai's loyalty is quietly stored for later reversal.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Esther 2 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. The chapter moves from the cooling of the king's anger to the institutional search for Vashti's replacement (vv. 1-4), then introduces Mordecai and Esther as Judean exiles already embedded within the machinery of Susa (vv. 5-11). Esther's ascent is narrated through favor, discipline, and concealment: she receives careful preparation, wins the approval of guardians and king alike, and yet keeps her lineage hidden in obedience to Mordecai (vv. 12-20). The closing conspiracy scene (vv. 21-23) quietly stores up the decisive memory that will later reverse the book's fortunes. In the Septuagint, Esther's hiddenness is not merely strategic but morally framed as reverent obedience, since v. 20 explicitly links Mordecai's command with fearing God and keeping his ordinances.

And after these things the king's anger subsided, and he no longer remembered Astin, though he kept in mind what she had said and how he had condemned her.

Transitionκαὶ
The chapter opens after the Vashti decree, noting that the king's anger cools but the memory of the affair remains.
