The Book of Hosea, Chapter 13ΩΣΗΕ ΙΓ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Forgotten grace and false kingship drive Ephraim toward death.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Hosea 13 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Hosea gathers themes of idolatry, ingratitude, kingship, and death into one sustained catastrophe-oracle. Ephraim's early standing in Israel gives way to Baal-serving death; silver-worked idols and cultic absurdity multiply sin; and the people who forgot the God who shepherded them in the wilderness are now met by him in predator imagery of panther, leopard, and bereaved bear. Yet the oracle is not without one of Hosea's great theological fissures: the promise of ransom from Hades and redemption from death in v. 14 stands in deliberately jarring tension with the surrounding devastation. The closing east-wind judgment then returns the oracle to desolation, drying veins, springs, land, and all desired vessels.
