The Book of Hosea, Chapter 5ΩΣΗΕ Ε′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Ritual and Assyria fail before the Lord's tearing judgment.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Hosea 5 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Judgment falls first on priests, royal house, and Israel together, accusing them of turning what should have been places of vigilance into traps. Its rhetoric alternates between exposure and pursuit: the Lord knows Ephraim completely, sacrifice will not avail when God has withdrawn, and alarms must sound across the land. Several LXX phrasings are vivid: Mizpah and Tabor are rendered with snare-and-net imagery, divine wrath is poured out like water, and Ephraim's political resort to Assyria is named as futile medicine for a wound only the Lord has authority to inflict or heal. The movement closes with the Lord as lion and panther, withdrawing until the people seek his face in affliction.
