The Book of Hosea, Chapter 8ΩΣΗΕ Η′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Kings, calves, and altars turn covenant privilege into ruin.

Translation & textual notes

The Greek text of Hosea 8 follows the standard critical text of the Septuagint as established in the Rahlfs-Hanhart edition (Septuaginta, rev. ed. 2006), an ancient and public-domain text; the critical apparatus is not reproduced. Trumpet-like urgency drives Hosea's exposure of false political and cultic self-reliance. Covenant and law have been transgressed, kings and rulers were established without the Lord, and gold and silver have been remade into idols. The famous agricultural proverb of sowing ruin and reaping destruction becomes, in the Greek, a sequence of wind-ruin, harvest, and foreign consumption. Samaria's calf is mocked as the work of a craftsman, altars multiply only into more sin, and even written ordinances are treated as alien. The final turn widens the charge to Judah as well: both sanctuary-building and fortified-city confidence invite the fire of judgment.

εἰς κόλπον αὐτῶν ὡς γῆ ὡς ἀετὸς ἐπ' οἶκον κυρίου ἀνθ' ὧν παρέβησαν τὴν διαθήκην μου καὶ κατὰ τοῦ νόμου μου ἠσέβησαν

Into their bosom comes the land's doom; like an eagle it comes upon the house of the Lord, because they transgressed my covenant and acted impiously against my law.

Alarm imageεἰς
The chapter opens with abrupt threat imagery: covenant violation has summoned a swift predatory judgment against the sanctuary and nation alike.
