The Book of Isaiah, Chapter 1ΗΣΑΪΑΣ Α′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Heaven and earth witness Judah's diseased injustice and rejected ritual.

Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 1 functions as the book's great overture: a vision-title introduces a covenant lawsuit in which heaven and earth are summoned as witnesses, Judah is exposed as a diseased and devastated body, and the Lord rejects ritual performance severed from justice. The Septuagint preserves the chapter's judicial and liturgical force while also giving several lines its own profile, especially in the cultic denunciation of verses 13-15 and the purification imagery of verses 24-27. The movement of the chapter is deliberate. It begins with rebellion described in filial terms, turns to the futility of sacrifices offered by bloody hands, then opens a real path of return through cleansing, justice, and reasoned submission to the Lord's word. The closing strophe holds together two outcomes that will govern much of Isaiah: Zion can be purged and restored into a faithful city, but idolaters who cling to their desired groves and handmade strength will perish with the works they trusted.

The vision that Isaiah son of Amoz saw, which he saw against Judea and against Jerusalem, during the reign of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, who reigned over Judea.

Superscriptionasyndeton
The book opens with a formal vision-title. The repeated verb of seeing underscores prophetic reception, and the reign list places the oracle squarely within Judah's political history.
