Zion's latter glory stands over against human pride and coming humiliation.

Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 2 sets one of the book's defining juxtapositions in place. The chapter opens with the exalted mountain of the Lord and the nations streaming to Zion for instruction, so that Torah, arbitration, and peace go out from Jerusalem to the world. The same chapter then pivots sharply to Judah's actual condition: the land is full of omens, wealth, cavalry, and idols, and therefore ripe for the day in which the Lord alone will be exalted. The Septuagint's wording sharpens several images, including the house of God set visibly on the mountain heights, the catalog of human grandeur brought low, and the grotesque disposal of silver and gold abominations to the bats. Taken as a whole, the chapter contrasts true elevation with false height: Zion is lifted because the Lord teaches there, whereas every self-made eminence, military, commercial, cultic, or political, collapses before his appearing.
