The Book of Isaiah, Chapter 11ΗΣΑΪΑΣ ΙΑ′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Jesse's shoot brings Spirit-filled justice, peace, and regathered Israel.

Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 11 presents the Spirit-endowed shoot from Jesse as the agent through whom royal justice, cosmic peace, and a new gathering of God's people are brought together. The Septuagint keeps the Davidic imagery of root, rod, and flower, yet it also sharpens several lines in ways that matter for interpretation: the ruler is filled with the fear of God, judges not by visible glory or reported speech, and destroys the ungodly by the breath that proceeds through his lips. The middle section's animal tableau is not merely decorative; it dramatizes a reordered creation in which predation, fear, and harm are displaced by the knowledge of the Lord. The closing movement then widens from the ruler himself to a second exodus. Scattered Israel and Judah are regathered from the nations, mutual jealousy is removed, hostile borders are overcome, and the drying of Egyptian and riverine barriers recalls the foundational deliverance of the exodus while projecting it into an eschatological future.

καὶ ἐξελεύσεται ῥάβδος ἐκ τῆς ῥίζης Ιεσσαι καὶ ἄνθος ἐκ τῆς ῥίζης ἀναβήσεται

And a rod shall come forth from the root of Jesse, and a blossom shall rise from the root.

Predictionasyndeton
The opening line introduces the renewed Davidic figure through plant imagery. The paired metaphors of rod and blossom announce continuity with Jesse even after apparent cutting down.
