The Book of Isaiah, Chapter 10ΗΣΑΪΑΣ Ι′

Each verse opens with the running Greek, an English translation, and a discourse note (its connective, relation, and role in the argument). Below follows the word-by-word breakdown in six tiers: gloss, case (color), parsing, syntax, semantic force, and a lexical note.

Case Nominative Genitive Dative Accusative Vocative Verb (no case) Indeclinable

Discourse notes head each verse: relation · connective · clause-flow. Indentation marks prominence — flush-left = main line of argument; indented = supporting / subordinate material.

Theme

Assyria is the Lord's rod until its arrogance also falls.

Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 10 continues the woe-cycle by condemning unjust decrees, then refigures Assyria as the Lord's rod: a commissioned instrument that nevertheless overreaches in arrogant self-exaltation. The Septuagint keeps the alternation between divine purpose and imperial boast, and it sharpens the theological irony by asking whether an axe or saw can magnify itself over the one who wields it. The chapter then turns toward remnant theology, promising that the survivors of Jacob will rest their confidence on the Holy One of Israel in truth, before closing with a vivid march of the Assyrian advance and the sudden felling of the proud by the Lord Sabaoth.
