Theme

Light dawns, a royal child is proclaimed, and judgment still burns against Israel.

Translation & textual notes

Isaiah 9 opens with the Septuagint's light-oracle to a people walking in darkness, then moves through release imagery, royal-child proclamation, and a sustained judgment refrain against Jacob and Israel. The Greek preserves the famous naming of the child as μεγάλης βουλῆς ἄγγελος, a rendering that gives the royal oracle an explicitly proclamatory and revelatory cast. The latter half of the chapter turns from promised peace to Ephraim's pride, corrupt leadership, and self-consuming violence, each cycle ending with the warning that the Lord's anger has not turned away and his hand remains raised.
